Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Chargers: What Dallas Homeowners Need to Know

EV sales in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have doubled in the last two years, and the number one question we get from new EV owners isn’t about the car — it’s about the charger. Specifically: do I really need a Level 2, or is the cord that came in the box good enough? Here’s the honest answer.
01
The Basics
What's the Actual Difference?
Both Level 1 and Level 2 chargers do the same thing: push electricity into your car’s battery. The difference is how fast they do it, and what your home needs to support them.
Level 1 uses a standard 120V outlet — the same one your toaster plugs into. No installation required, just plug in and charge. Level 2 runs on 240V (same as your dryer or oven) and requires a dedicated circuit and a wall-mounted unit installed by a licensed electrician. Level 1 adds 3–5 miles per hour. Level 2 adds 20–35.
02
When It's Fine
Level 1 Is Actually Enough — Sometimes
Level 1 gets a bad reputation, but it’s genuinely sufficient for some drivers. If you drive fewer than 30–40 miles a day and plug in every night, a standard outlet will keep up. You’re adding 30–40 miles of range overnight, which covers most local commutes in Frisco, Plano, or Allen without issue.
It’s also a reasonable temporary solution while you figure out your longer-term setup — or if you have a second EV on Level 2 and just need a trickle charge option in the garage.

Most Daily Drivers
Level 2 Is Worth It If You Drive It Every Day
If you drive 40+ miles regularly, have a long-range EV with a 60+ kWh battery, share the car between multiple drivers, or don’t always remember to plug in the night before — Level 1 will frustrate you within a month.
Level 2 means a full charge every morning, no planning required. You plug in when you get home and forget about it. That’s the difference in day-to-day life.

What to Expect
What the Installation Actually Involves
A Level 2 install is a straightforward job for a licensed electrician. We run a dedicated 240V, 50-amp circuit from your panel to where you want the charger — usually the garage wall nearest your parking spot. The unit gets hardwired or plug-mounted, and we pull a permit so the install is code-compliant.
The part people don’t plan for: if your panel is already near capacity, we may need to add a breaker or upgrade the panel. This is more common in DFW homes built before 2005. We check for this upfront — no surprises after work starts.

Budget
What Does It Cost in DFW?
Most Level 2 installs in the DFW area run between $400 and $900 all-in — including the charger unit, circuit, permit, and labour. If a panel upgrade is also needed, that’s a separate line item we’ll quote clearly before anything is agreed.
Brands like ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, and Emporia are solid options. We’re happy to recommend based on your car and usage — or install a unit you’ve already purchased. Either way works.
“Nine out of ten EV owners we talk to end up wishing they’d gone Level 2 from the start. The difference in day-to-day convenience is significant — and the install pays for itself quickly when you’re not worrying about whether you charged enough last night.”
